Matthew
Sowcik
As a professor and the Director of Leadership Education, in
the Department of Entrepreneurship and Leadership
Studies at Wilkes University, I have been responsible
for the development and delivery of academic leadership
programs at the institution. I have had the opportunity
to develop both an interdisciplinary Leadership Studies
minor and a one-of-a-kind personal and professional
leadership development program, which is part of the
Business School’s core curriculum. My experience in the
design, delivery, and assessment of academic based
Leadership Studies programs is one area of interest I
bring to the Leadership Education MIG.
An additional area of interest includes research I have
conducted on the emergence and sustainability of
Leadership Studies programs. I have had the unique
opportunity to use the International Leadership
Association’s Guiding Questions: Guidelines for
leadership education programs, to conduct case study
research on different Leadership Studies programs
including: Marietta College’s McDonough Center for
Leadership and Business, The University of Richmond’s
Jepson School of Leadership Studies, Fort Hays State
University, University of Texas of the Permian Basin,
Peace College, and the University of Southern Maine. As
a result of this research, I have seen both an emergence
of common themes in Leadership Studies/Education and the
need to strengthen our collaborative efforts as a field
of study.

Brent
Goertzen
As Chair of a Department of Leadership Studies
at a public university, I am responsible, in part, for coordinating
our ‘assurance of learning’ activities and disseminating
that information to our many stakeholders. My experiences
in assessment of student learning, I believe, is one of
the unique qualities I bring to the Leadership Education
MIG. I have facilitated other conference sessions regarding
the idea of aligning mission, learning objectives and assessment
activities. While I do not necessarily see myself as an
expert in the area of assessment of leadership programs,
I do view myself as one who has a keen interest to engage
in the dialogue as well as a willingness to help facilitate
these conversations.
Additionally, I currently serve as Associate
Editor for the Journal of Leadership Education, a peer-reviewed
journal sponsored by the Association of Leadership Educators
(ALE). ALE’s primary purpose is to strengthen the field
of leadership education. A potential partnership between
our respective organizations can be critical to provide
the necessary synergy to build credibility for our emerging
discipline in leadership education.
