2009 Fredric M. Jablin Doctoral Dissertation Award Winner
Kathie Pelletier

The ILA is pleased to recognize the winner of the 2009 Fredric M. Jablin Doctoral Dissertation Award, Kathie Pelletier from the Claremont Graduate University, School of Behavioral and Organizational Sciences for her dissertation “The Effects of Favored Status and Identification with Victim on Perceptions of and Reactions to Leader Toxicity.”

The Jablin Dissertation Award was created in 1999 by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. The award inspires and recognizes outstanding new scholarship that demonstrates substantial insights and implications for the study of leadership. Renamed in 2004 in memory of Jepson professor, Fredric M. Jablin, since 2005, the ILA has partnered with Jepson on the award.

As winner of this award, Pelletier received a $1,000 cash prize, a complimentary one-year membership to the ILA, and complimentary registration and travel expenses to 2009 Annual ILA Global Conference.

Pelletier‘s dissertation examined the roles of leader member exchange (LMX) relationships and social identity on perceptions of leader toxicity and intentions to challenge a leader who exhibits toxic behavior. Results indicated that LMX status influenced perceptions of toxicity and intentions to challenge.

A significant interaction between LMX status and identification with the victim on perceptions of toxicity was found. The results also indicate that perceptions of toxicity differ depending on one’s LMX status. Further, people can agree on what constitutes toxicity but their perceptions of the levels of toxicity and subsequent challenging intentions differ based on their LMX status and the identity of the target.

Pelletier is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Management at California State University, San Bernardino. Her research interests include toxic and ethical leadership, organizational corruption, ethics program effectiveness, and women’s issues in the workplace.

Kathie has held leadership positions for 26 years, in both private and public sectors and earned her Ph.D. while working full time as a manager in public health, and later, as the training and development manager for a city government agency. She was also an administrator at the Connective Leadership Institute (founded by Jean Lipman-Blumen) and is currently a member of the Connective Leadership Institute’s Advisory Board.

Pelletier presented her work at the ILA annual global conference in Prague on November 14. Al Goethals, Professor at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, commented on her presentation. Kathie was formally presented with her award at the closing ceremony of the ILA Prague Conference.
